Context

Leeds has an extensive portfolio of research collaborations across the African continent. While bilateral funding to support research and innovation has declined with the reduction in the UK Aid budget to 0.3%, there are still opportunities to fund collaboration. 

Horizon Europe 

The EU will fund participation of low and middle-income countries as third country partners. There are also schemes such as the Africa Initiative IV which include open calls in specific research areas. For more information on EU-Africa collaboration see the relevant pages on the European Commission’s website. 

UKRI 

UKRI’s project co-lead (international) policy allows international collaborators to be costed into grants at up to 30% of the total cost of the project. This cap is lifted by certain research councils when the collaborating institution is in a low and middle-income country. You should check the call guidelines of the call you are applying to for confirmation of this. 

Academic exchange 

The Royal Society's International Exchanges is an annual scheme which supports new research collaborations with academics outside of the UK.
